Nursing: RN & LPN
As a nurse, your job is not simply limited to one task per day. You play a vital role in the healthcare system as an advocate for patients and a liaison between doctors and specialists. You have the ability to remain calm and empathetic as a source of support in difficult times.
Studying to become a RN or LPN at NCC is a challenging but rewarding experience. You not only learn how to save lives, but you also care for others no matter the situation.
NCC recognizes that not all nursing students follow the same goal-oriented approach, and therefore offers two career options: the associate degree to become a registered nurse (RN) or the practical nursing certificate for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN).
Each program is comprised of general education and nursing courses that include planned clinical experience. Nursing education provides the students with basic knowledge and skills necessary for competent beginning level practice. It prepares a caring and empathetic nurse, who functions as a self-directed learner and accepts responsibility for professional behavior.
LPN is a fall-start clinical program. The application opens October 1 and must be completed by February 1.
RN is a fall-start and spring-start clinical program depending on campus location. For fall start, the application opens October 1 and must be completed by February 1. For spring start, the application opens May 1 and must be completed by September 15.

The Associate Degree Nursing Program at NCC prepares graduates to assume entry level positions as registered nurses who provide safe, competent nursing care in the various settings of our dynamic, evolving healthcare environment. These settings can include, but are not limited to hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, long term care, home care, clinics, physicians' offices, the community and many other agencies. Successful completion of the program qualifies graduates to apply for licensure as a registered nurse and to take the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN)®. This examination is used by the State Board of Nursing to assess the entry-level nursing competence of candidates for licensure as registered nurses. When the candidate successfully completes the NCLEX-RN ® exam, a license is issued. Information about the NCLEX-RN® exam is available at www.ncsbn.org/nclex.htm.

The Practical Nursing (PN) certificate program prepares graduates for entry into the nursing profession as a practical nurse. Practical nurses work under the direction of a licensed registered nurse, licensed physician or dentist. The program includes 27 credits of nursing courses and 17 credits of general education courses and can be completed in one calendar year. It is offered at the Monroe and Bethlehem campus locations.
Program Information
LPNs and RNs are often mistaken as the same profession - however, the two distinct jobs require different responsibilities and training procedures.
As an RN, you receive an associates in applied science degree after two years of studying. With an LPN certificate you will provide basic care to patients, such as checking blood pressure, determining heart rates, bathing patients and dressing injuries. You are also frequently responsible for completing paperwork and other administrative tasks. LPNs often serve as the primary point of contact with patients and their family members.
RNs have a slightly expanded role compared to LPNs. You may play out the administration of medication, perform complex diagnostic tests, and provide treatment and aftercare advice as part of the discharge process. As a registered nurse, you will graduate with a bachelor's or associate degree in nursing, whereas most LPNs will complete a certificate program from an accredited nursing college. In Pennsylvania, both positions require the successful completion of a National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) exam - for RNs, the NCLEX-RN® and for LPNs, the NCLEX-PN®.
Northampton Community College's RN and LPN programs provide you with exceptional clinical classes to expose you to the everyday challenges of a nurse. Your education is not only conducted in the classroom, but practical tasks provide you necessary skills to perform the distinctive roles of an LPN or RN. NCC also teaches you theoretical background requirements to pass the appropriate NCSBN exam. You can schedule your nursing courses during the day or evening and on the weekends if necessary.
Admission to NCC's nursing programs is competitive. If you're a high school applicant, you must have a strong academic record, including courses in biology, chemistry and algebra. You must also complete a thorough background check, a health assessment and demonstrate the recent completion of an approved CPR course.
NCC's well-respected Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse programs offer you a fast way to become a healthcare professional. Studying in NCC's facilities and small classes will help you gain the necessary skills and to help you interact directly with your instructors.Upon graduation, you will be well-positioned to complete the NCSBN exam and begin applying for entry-level nursing positions. If you choose to continue your education through one of our transfer agreements, you can place earned credits from our nursing program toward the completion of a four-year bachelor degree.

If you are a Northampton Community College student living outside of Pennsylvania or intending to complete an internship or clinical placement outside of the state in a NCC program leading to professional licensure, you should review requirements on the state board website to make sure that the program qualifies.
Licensure requirements vary from state to state and you may require additional authorization from the professional licensing agency in that state. Participating in a program from outside of Pennsylvania, if not properly authorized by that state's professional licensing board, could result in loss of licensing eligibility.
