The field of communications helps develop oral and written communication skills. Critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal skills, presentation skills and teamwork are some of the concepts addressed.
Effective communication skills are integral to career success. Employers frequently list communication skills, a strong work ethic, teamwork skills, initiative and interpersonal skills as characteristics they look for in new hires. The courses offered within the Communication Studies curriculum allow students to develop these vital characteristics.
Northampton's Communications Studies program offers courses that are commonly taken during the first two years of a bachelor's degree in the field. Working closely with your advisor, you can plan a schedule that will prepare you for entry to a four-year college.
This program provides basic preparation leading to communication-related careers in organizations and corporations dealing with media, education, business, public service, tourism, journalism, public relations, politics, broadcasting and sales.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov), employment in communications-related fields (media, broadcasting) is expected to grow 10 percent by 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations.
